What cryptocurrency wallet development actually involves

The custodial-versus-non-custodial decision is the first and most consequential choice in any wallet build, and it's as much a business and compliance decision as a technical one. Custodial wallets — where you hold keys on behalf of users — offer familiar login-based UX and easier account recovery, but make you responsible for securing those keys and typically bring you into scope for custody-related regulatory obligations. For non-custodial wallets, key material is generated and stored using the device's secure enclave or Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) — hardware-isolated storage that even the operating system can't directly read — with biometric authentication gating access to signing operations. This means a compromised app process alone can't extract the key; an attacker would need to compromise the secure hardware itself, a meaningfully higher bar.

Multi-chain support is architected around a common transaction-signing abstraction layer rather than bolting on each new chain as a separate code path, which is what lets us add support for an additional blockchain without re-architecting the wallet's core. Swap aggregation and staking features integrate through the same abstraction, pulling routes and yields from multiple providers and presenting the best available option rather than locking users into a single third-party integration.
